A Rising Sign or Ascending Sign represents first impressions and appearance. There are several ways to interpret Rising Signs and they aren’t all positive. However, while the Rising Sign tends to represent a surface-level mask, there are some important aspects associated with it, making it a fairly complicated placement. (Something you may not know is that horoscopes are actually written with Rising Signs in mind. I’m not big on horoscopes but I’ve found that information interesting nonetheless). To read about what your ultimate life path entails in one word, read on.
First, to learn your Rising Sign click this link. Remember that you must know at least within about ten minutes of your exact birth time in order to find your Rising Sign (sometimes this is on your birth certificate).
A negative aspect of Rising Signs is that they can represent the types of things people gossip about behind your back. Where a Moon sign hides that sign’s negative traits, a Rising Sign brings them to the surface for others to see (whether they’re actually there or not). For example; a Scorpio Rising will come across as manipulative and intimidating to people who maybe don’t quite understand said person. I have found that people who aren’t particularly good at reading others see Rising Sign traits, as this is often a mask. When people are gossiping about me behind my back, the untrue things they’re saying are usually associated with surface-level Cancer traits, since this is my Rising Sign.
Since a Rising Sign can be a bit of a mask, when put in an uncomfortable situation, you may hide behind your Rising Sign. For example, when I am feeling uncomfortable or uncharacteristically insecure in a social situation, I put on my Cancer Mask. I usually see Rising Signs when people are insecure.
On a deeper level, though, Rising Signs guide the chart in a way as well. I know, that sounds confusing. It’s a mask, and also a guide? When you think about it, when you put on a mask you start acting like that character, and it takes you places you didn’t think you could ever go without it. What’s special about a Rising Sign Mask is that it does speak to you. It isn’t random at all, since it’s so unique to you and the time you were born.
Rising Signs guide people to understand their life path. It speaks to the nature of their heart, which is funny since gossip usually centers around the Rising Sign’s negative traits, which aren’t usually true about a person. The positive traits associated with the Rising Sign are typically the truer ones.
Since it can reveal one’s life path (several placements speak to life path, I want to throw out there, but they speak to different areas of it. One talks about career, another more karmic. This is very much a more general placement). To go along with this, your Rising Sign tells you which planet your Chart Ruler is as well. Your Chart Ruler reveals the placement that most of your life decisions go back to. Yep. Astrology just keeps diving deeper and deeper, doesn’t it? If you’re a little lost, don’t worry, you’re not alone. For example: I have a Cancer Rising. Cancer, the sign, is ruled by the Moon. In the end, many of my decisions go back to my Moon placement (my emotions). A list with Signs and their corresponding Ruling Planets and the planet’s meanings will be listed at the end of this article.
As said in my Moon Sign Placement article, a Rising Sign is different from a Sun Sign and definitely not as powerful or telling. Personality-wise, Rising Signs are pretty superficial. As a Cancer Rising, I’m not going to understand a Cancer Moon or Cancer Sun in-depth as they do each other.
